Labrador Retriever Training for Ducks, Dove & Geese

The weather is absolutely amazing this time of year and it is a good time to get in some prime labrador retriever training. In addition to training duck dogs, Duck Dog Trainer also works with retrievers that are trained for dove and geese hunts as well. We try to rotate our set up through out the week of training in order to mimic different types of hunts based on each client’s specific needs. We often set out goose decoys in large quantities and practice longer retrieves that would be common to goose hunting. While doing this type of training we also make sure to use goose calls. For our dove scenarios we will train in a field with tallow trees where doves would land.  We also train in heavier than usual cover with most retrieves in the 30-50 yard range. While this might seem to be very close range, it is actually very realistic. We do this hunt training while sitting on a stool. For duck dog training, we use several dozen decoys and our own custom built duck calls. We practice from boats and blinds while being sure to shoot multiple shotguns. While this extra effort setting up seems to be a little over the top, we believe it produces better dogs and that is our desire. We strive to produce dogs our clients can be proud of.
