Understanding Dog Crates

July 14, 2016 By duckdaddy

There are almost as many different brands of dog crates as there are breeds of dogs. With so many choices available in today’s market, it is difficult to know which dog crate is best for you.  There are several things to consider before making a purchase so we will start by simply looking at application.  What exactly are you going to be do with your crate? Or,  in other words,  where will the crate be when your dog is in it?  By establishing where the dog crate will reside MOST of the time, it will be easier to determine which option is best for your situation.

Wired Dog Crates

dog cratesThe first and most basic of the crates are the wire dog crates. This crate is an open air design made from wire and contains a plastic pan or tray where the dog stands.  This crate is meant to be used in the shade and for the most part, out of the elements since it has virtually no cover or protection from rain or snow.  The benefit is maximum visibility and airflow for your pet. This dog crate is actually a perfect for putting in the house with maybe some kind of pad under the bottom of the crate.

Molded Plastic Dog Crates

dog cratesNext are the plastic two piece or molded crates.  These have a solid top, rear, and bottom but are usually vented on the sides.  These are the type required for airline travel and are a nice, inexpensive all around crate. Vari Kennel, Pet Porter, and Remington are some of the brands that make this style.  These work well indoors as well as outdoors to carry your pet hunting and you can even purchase an insulated cover for cold days.  However…heed my WARNING…. these dog crates are not made for extreme heat directly in the sun.  Most of this style can be bought for $100 or less with the exception of the solid molded  (one piece) versions that are considerably higher.

Stainless Steel Dog Crates

dog cratesThe final style crate is head and shoulders above the rest but may require a bank loan for purchase!  These crates are made from stainless steel or aluminum and are heavily insulated and extremely well ventilated. The upgrade options are water, lights, and fans.  These are suitable for all weather when used properly with common sense. These crates are available as trailers and multi dog units for trucks as well.  Due to their weight they are not a good indoor option but are great for serious hunters and those involved with the duck dog training industry. Some of the top brands are Deerskin, Ainley, and Mountain Top Custom Kennels.

I hope this helps with your search of dog crates. Having proper boarding for your dog is important for your beloved pup.  As always… make sure your dog has plenty of water and a clean, cool, safe place to stay!
