My Love For Hunting Dogs…

January 31, 2014 By duckdaddy

my love for hunting dogsHunting Dogs….they are what make me want to go hunting. As I look back over my life, there has always been a hunting dog involved. First it was my dad’s labrador retriever named Miss Marsh Wind. We called her Missy for short. She was a great pet and an incredible duck dog. I can still remember her retrieving my first duck when I was nine. The duck was a cripple and I just new it had gotten away.  Five minutes later Missy came back with my trophy hen Gadwall. I learned then and there the important role a great dog plays in duck hunting.  I also remember my grandfather’s beagles. They were our deer and rabbit hunters.  The sound of those dogs chasing deer through the woods will never be forgotten. Then there was another dog we just called… “Old Dog.” He hung out around our camp in the woods and no one knew who he belonged to… maybe we belonged to him. “Old Dog” was the finest squirrel treeing dog I’ve ever seen.  As kids, when my brother and I would walk out to go hunting with our shotguns in hand, some how “Old Dog” showed up ready to go. We killed countless squirrels with him. He treed them AND retrieved them. As unbelievable as it may sound, we were sitting around many years later after “Old Dog” had gone where all good hunting dogs go.  We tried to calculate his age from when we first saw him until we last saw him. In our best estimate, he had to be over 20 years old.

I still look back and remember fondly when  I got my first dog, Midnight.  She was a black lab with a great ability to hunt. I trained her myself. It was during my training time with Midnight that my love for hunting dogs became a lifelong passion. Now I find myself as the owner of DuckDogTrainer.com. If you would have told me 30 years ago that I would be training dogs for a living and sharing the message of Jesus to make a difference, I’m not sure I could have believed it. What an amazing journey!! It is both an honor and a privilege to be able to serve both God and you. Thank you for trusting us with your dog. It is truly the desire of our heart to help your dog become the absolute best hunting dog he or she can be.  Not a day goes by that I don’t thank God that I get to serve Him and my customers.

love of hunting dogsAs a father, I couldn’t be more proud to have my son Caleb come along side me to be a next generation duck dog trainer.  Caleb is a fantastic learner, a hard worker and has taken to duck dog training like…well…a good dog takes to water. I’m super excited to partner with him on his brand new company www.DuckDogBreeder.com. He has worked very hard, used his own resources that he has earned and is laying the foundation to become a premier American lab breeder. If you are looking for a great hunting dog,  then I believe we are the kennel for you. We don’t train field trial dogs, show dogs or hunt test dogs. Our goal is to train dogs that work in real world hunting situations.  We want dogs that are reliable companions that you would never want to go hunting without. Let us train your dog so your hunts can be more fun and help you create memories of a lifetime.
